Product Safety and Quality Assurance

Hans-Wilhelm Windhorst, Institute for Spatial Analysis and Planning in Areas of Intensive Agriculture, University of Vechta, Germany
Aalt Dijkhuizen, Wageningen University, The Netherlands

Healthy livestock populations are absolutely essential for high standards of food quality and safety. The increasing productivity expected from livestock, and growing consumer
demands for food quality mean that intensification of step-by-step control during the production of food from animal sources is urgently required to gain consumer trust and acceptance.

Goals of the scientific discourse

  • Development of internationally recognised standards of product quality and security
  • Development and implementation of recording systems for the documentation and control of formal quality standards within the production chain of food and raw materials originating from livestock farming
  • Creation of regionally self-contained production infrastructures to reduce disease risk and achieve complete traceability regarding animal source
